Introduction

Introduction

This discount calculator estimates the amount saved and the final sale price from an original price and a discount percentage. It can also solve for a missing original price, sale price, or percentage when the other values are known.

Use the result as a price comparison aid. Taxes, shipping, fees, coupons, minimum spend rules, and store rounding may change the amount charged at checkout.

Definition

What is a discount?

A discount reduces an original price by a stated percentage or fixed amount. The discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount rate, and the sale price is the original price minus that amount.

A percentage discount is relative to the original price. Two discounts applied one after another are usually multiplied sequentially rather than simply added together.

Discount formulas

Discount amountDiscount = original price × discount rate

Convert 25% to 0.25, then multiply it by the original price.

Sale priceSale price = original price − discount

Subtract the discount amount from the original price, then apply any separate tax or fee assumptions.

Sequential discountsFinal price = original price × (1 − rate 1) × (1 − rate 2)

The second discount is applied to the already reduced price unless the seller explicitly defines a combined discount.

A 20% discount followed by 10% is an overall reduction of 28%, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the reduced price.

              Result interpretation

              How to interpret the result

The savings figure is the amount removed from the original price before separate taxes and fees. The sale price is not necessarily the final checkout total.

Check whether the advertised original price is genuine, whether the discount applies to all items, and whether coupons can be combined.

Adding sequential discount percentages instead of applying them one after another.

Applying a discount to the tax-inclusive total when the offer applies before tax.

This tool calculates arithmetic only. It cannot verify a retailer’s original price, promotion terms, product exclusions, or advertising compliance.

Review the offer details before paying, especially when a discount is combined with financing, subscriptions, or recurring charges.

              Frequently asked questions

              FAQ

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the percentage written as a decimal, then subtract the discount amount from the original price.

              What is 20% off 50?

The savings are 10 and the sale price is 40.

              Are two discounts added together?

Usually no. Sequential discounts are applied one at a time, so the second percentage applies to the reduced price.

Is tax calculated before or after the discount?

It depends on the transaction and local rules. Run the discount first only when the offer applies before tax.

Can I calculate the original price?

Yes. Divide the sale price by one minus the discount rate, provided the sale price came from a percentage discount.

              Does shipping receive the discount?

Only if the offer terms say so. Enter shipping separately when estimating the checkout total.

Why does the checkout total differ?

Taxes, shipping, fees, rounding, exclusions, and coupon rules may not be included in the basic calculation.

Can a discount be more than 100%?

A normal price discount cannot reduce a positive price below zero. Check the inputs if a result is negative.
